Stainless steel & adjacent alloys
Electropolishing uses an electric current to remove material from the surface of stainless steel in a controlled manner, leaving a smooth, shiny finish. It is similar to electroplating, though, rather than adding material, removes it.
While it is often used to improve the appearance of metal objects, it also has practical applications: increased corrosion resistance, the enhanced performance of certain mechanical parts, and the removal of surface contaminants to name a few.
Stainless steel & adjacent alloys
Passivation, in relation to stainless steel, is a process used to enhance the corrosion resistance of the material by promoting the formation of a thin, protective oxide layer on its surface.
Stainless steel is already corrosion-resistant due to the presence of chromium in its composition, which forms a passive oxide layer on its surface. However, this oxide layer can become disrupted during manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, or grinding. Ultimately, this leaves the material vulnerable to corrosion. Passivation can be employed to restore and enhance the protective oxide layer by removing any iron or iron compounds that might have become embedded or introduced onto the surface during manufacturing.
Aluminum
Anodizing is an electrochemical process that is involves creating a controlled oxide layer on the surface of the aluminum; it is commonly used to enhance the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and appearance of aluminum and its alloys.
The controlled oxide layer created during the anodizing process is porous; this allows for dyeing in a variety of colors: red, blue, green, gold, purple, orange, and more. Though, if dyeing is unnecessary, the layer can be left clear (or natural).
This process has found applications in a variety of industries, such as aerospace, medical, architecture, and consumer goods, where both functional and aesthetic properties are important.
Aluminum
Chemfilm, or chemical conversion coating, is a process used to treat the surface of aluminum and its alloys. This process enhances the metal’s corrosion resistance, improves adhesion for subsequent coatings or paints, and provides a base for bonding adhesives.
Versatile and inexpensive, Chemfilm has found applications in various industries such as aerospace, electronics, and architecture, where aluminum parts and surfaces need to be protected from corrosion and prepared for further processing or painting.
Steel & aluminum
Electroless Nickel, also known as autocatalytic nickel plating, is a method used to deposit a layer of nickel onto a substrate surface without the need for an external electric current.
Electroless Nickel is widely employed in industries where improved corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and surface hardness are desired. Further, it can be used for decorative purposes and as a base for subsequent coatings or finishes.
